Winterization Guide

When to Winterize Your Sprinklers in Atlanta

Aim for late October to early November. Atlanta's first freeze comes around November 13 on average, and it has come a month sooner than that.

What the Freeze Dates Say

The National Weather Service puts Atlanta's average first freeze at November 13. That is only an average. The earliest on record was October 11, 1906, and the latest was December 18, 1998.

Those numbers come from one weather station, and your yard may not match it. Athens, about an hour northeast, averages November 7. If you live on the north side of the metro or in a low spot, plan on the early side.

What Is Really at Risk

The pipes in the ground are usually the safest part of your system. UGA Extension notes that only the top few inches of ground tend to freeze in most of Georgia, and buried lines should sit below that.

The trouble is what sits at or above ground. UGA Extension calls out backflow prevention valves in particular, along with any exposed pipe. Water expands as it freezes, and sustained cold can split those parts.

Not every freeze is equal. The Weather Service treats several hours at 28°F or colder as a hard freeze, and that is the kind to get ahead of. One light frost is not a reason to panic, but it is your reminder to get on the schedule.

When to Schedule

TimingWhat to do
Mid to late OctoberBook your visit. This is the safest window, weeks ahead of the average first freeze.
Early NovemberGet it done now. You are close to the average first freeze.
Mid-November onSchedule as soon as you can. Cold snaps repeat through winter, so it is not too late.

If you laid sod or seeded this fall, tell us when you book, because new grass may need water after you would normally shut down. Established lawns need far less in winter. Alabama Extension says little or no supplemental water is needed from November to March in its region, and Atlanta's cool months are not far off from that.

If a Hard Freeze Is in the Forecast Before Your Visit

  • Turn off your controller so no zone runs during the freeze.
  • Shut off the water supply to your irrigation system if you know where it is.
  • Wrap any exposed valves or pipes. UGA Extension suggests tape or a sack will do in a pinch.

Be Careful With an Air Compressor

Blowing out a system by hand can do more harm than good. Colorado State University Extension warns that pressure vacuum breakers and reduced pressure backflow devices must never be blown out with compressed air, because the heat can melt the rubber seals inside. Its advice was written for a colder climate, but the parts are the same.
